Report for the Week Ending: July 13, 2003

NORTH DAKOTA

Crop condition ratings for most crops declined from the previous week due to hot, dry weather in the southwest and wet weather in the northeast, central and eastern part of the state. However the small grain condition ratings continue to be better than last year's drought affected ratings.

MINNESOTA

Crop development throughout the state was not hampered by the cool weather this past week. Twenty-two percent of barley is turning ripe compared to the 5-year average of 18%.

SOUTH DAKOTA

There was a break from the excessive heat of the previous week, as many areas of the state received rain showers and below-normal temperatures. The barley crop is 1% ripe, compared to 15% last year and the 5-year average of 10%.

IDAHO

Grasshoppers have become a major problem for farmers and ranchers in South-Central and Southeast Idaho. Most crop damage occurs in the fields that border rangeland. Mealy bugs, a relatively new pest for Southeast Idaho, have been reported in barley fields in Bannock and Caribou Counties.

MONTANA

Most of Montana received some precipitation last week, however, the southwest and south central parts of the state saw less in comparison. Continued hot and dry weather over the past few weeks is negatively impacting on small grain crops across the state.

WASHINGTON

Dry conditions continue to negatively impact Palouse crops, and heads of some spring grains were not filling, reducing yield expectations for spring crops.

COLORADO

Colorado experienced record high temperatures coupled with dry winds most of the week, causing crop conditions to decline statewide. Spring barley continues to be rated in mostly good to excellent condition.

WYOMING

Precipitation levels were well below normal and temperatures much above normal. Barley crop progress continued near or a little ahead of the average pace.

OREGON

Conditions remained hot and dry throughout much of the State, and temperatures in general increased slightly from last week. Irrigation usage has picked up. Eighty-nine percent of the barley is headed.
